Absolute Beginners Computer Instruction
My Teaching Philosophy
Some people in my classes already have been to one or even more computer classes. Often they dropped out early. The reasons are that most of the computer classes are too fast for people who are absolute beginners. I strive to match my teaching speed exactly to the need of the class I have in front of me. After I show something on the screen, I make sure that everybody understands. I also encourage the students to help each other. Usually I also walk through the lines and check on the computers people are working on. I know it is not that easy to transfer the knowledge from the teacher´s screen to ones own computer. Very often people are afraid to "damage" something on their computers. They need encouragement and reassurance that a certain step on the computer is the right one.
A computer is a very visual medium. You look at the screen and have nice, colored images in front of you. You get something explained and you think: Oh yes, that´s clear, now I know. The next day you are sitting in front of your computer and you do not find what you are looking for. That happened a thousand times to me. Learning and remembering how things are structured and working on a computer, is not that easy. You need to be slow, write things down and repeat in order to really understand what you are doing.
So what I usually do when I do computer instruction: I check out the speed of my client and go exactly as fast or as slow as needed. That needs some patience, not only the patience of the instructor, but also the patience of the student. By the way, if I am dealing with a very tech savvy person, I speed up, don´t worry.
